Kenilworth School Newsletter 17 Sept 2010

Read the full Newsletter 17th September 2010 at (Google Docs) text only version below:

Dear All,

A number of new teachers have started this year at Kenilworth and we extend a warm welcome to them.  Over the next few weeks, they will introduce themselves to you so that you are aware of who they are and where their specialist areas lie.  Ms Castro will be on maternity leave for the remainder of the year, and Mr Reeve will be the Assistant Headteacher responsible for behaviour management and pastoral care in her absence.

This year we will be reintroducing the new House system across the school.  The aim of this will be to reward competition, effort and team work and to develop greater consistency in the rewards and sanctions that we apply.  The system is not entirely new but we will be looking at how we can create a greater sense of team spirit across our large split site school, whilst still retaining the best features of our behaviour for learning system.  In the next two weeks, we will be explaining how the new system will work to all students in assemblies and the house system will be launched immediately after half term.

I hope that both year 13 students and their parents found this week’s Parents’ Evening to be productive.  We have already begun the process of supporting year 13 students for their university applications.  Earlier this week, we held an assembly for year 13, led by a Professor from Warwick University, on what makes a good personal statement.  Next week, we have an admissions tutor from De Montfort University to talk to our students on how to fill in the UCAS forms and to provide guidance about choices.  All of our year 13 students will be supported by their tutors through PSHE lessons and individual tutorials so that they can secure a place at a university of their choice. Last year 217 of our students secured a place at a university of their choice.

This year our Open Evening for prospective year 7 pupils and their parents will be held on 30th September.  As the staff and students will require time for preparing for this event and setting up displays, school will close at 12.35 on this day.  Lunch will be provided for those students who require it.  If you wish your son/daughter to remain in school for the afternoon, please let us know so that arrangements can be made for their supervision.  In addition to the Open Evening, we will also be hosting two Open Mornings, on Monday 4th October and Wednesday 6th October from 9 – 9.45am.  If anyone is unable to attend the Open Evening, they are most welcome to attend one of the Open Mornings and see our industrious staff and students at work.

Thank you for your continued support.

Yours sincerely
H.H.S Abbott
Headteacher

Mrs S. Goodman
Modern Foreign Languages Teacher

I have lived and worked in Kenilworth on and off for some years, between periods of living in France and Belgium. It is a real pleasure to be back.

Having taught languages in both Secondary and Primary schools, it is great to be able to combine the two in this newly created post of Transition teacher for French.

I'm looking forward to catching up on the progress of many of those students I knew in Primary!

Mrs S. Green
Head of English

I am thrilled to be joining Kenilworth School as part of the English faculty this year.

Most recently, I have been working at a Coventry school and previously another school in Warwickshire.

I am hoping to raise the profile of English at Kenilworth and aim to support all faculties with literacy across the curriculum. I am passionate about personalising learning for every student and endeavour to share this passion and enthusiasm with them. My door is always open to staff, students and parents.

Miss J. Gardiner
Mandarin Teacher

I am delighted to be joining Kenilworth School and have received a lovely warm
welcome.

I am originally from Ledbury in Herefordshire. I studied Mandarin Chinese at the
University of Sheffield. My degree in Chinese Studies was a four year course which included a year in China studying at Nanjing University.

During my year abroad, in addition to learning the language, I also travelled all over China and immersed myself in Chinese culture. Since then, I have returned to China several times for further study, more travelling and more of my favourite Chinese food!

I went back to Sheffield to complete my PGCE last year. I did two teaching placements at two different schools; one of which has recently introduced Mandarin and one which has been teaching it for over ten years. This provided me with valuable experience and lots of ideas.

Controlled Assessment

Since September 2009, Controlled Assessment has replaced coursework for most new
GCSEs, as well as other 14-19 courses.

What is Controlled Assessment?
It is a form of internal assessment where the control levels for each assessment stage (task
setting, task taking and task marking) have been defined by QCA for all examination boards.
Controlled assessment tasks have a time guidance which should be adhered to.

Student attendance
As the examination boards have issued time guidance for the completion of controlled
assessments good attendance is therefore very important. Key dates and deadlines will be sent
home for parents / carers information each term. If your child is absent it is important that
school is notified as soon as possible.

How will controlled assessment be delivered?
Each subject area has planned the delivery window or dates where controlled assessment in
their subject will take place. To reduce pressure on your son / daughter these have been
staggered across year 10 and the Autumn and Spring terms of year 11. A letter outlining the controlled assessment dates will be sent home with your son / daughter each term. They will also be available to view on the school intranet.

Where will controlled assessments take place?
• Controlled assessment is designed to take place within the normal teaching timetable, for
example in the classroom, lab or workshop.
• There may be occasions, however, when it is more appropriate or convenient to have all
students in a larger venue, such as the hall or Gym under close supervision; but this will
be the exception.

So...
These assessments are, of course, very important and students need to approach them with a serious and mature attitude, making sure that any preparation is done properly and that advice of teachers is followed closely. It goes without saying that very good attendance is essential and as the controlled assessments will take place all year round, any time off school should be avoided at all costs.
