We celebrated our pupils’ achievements at our Awards Evening on Wednesday of this week. It was a pleasure to celebrate the successes of our pupils and to watch the excellent student presentations and performances on the night.
Unfortunately, not every student can receive an award but we try to recognise
outstanding contributions that students make across the board.
I would like to thank the students who provided essential technical support in
the hall. Our guest, Mr Jim Lawless is one of Europe’s leading inspirational
speakers and he delivered an engaging and entertaining address about the ten
principles to change one’s life and confront the barriers which many people
place upon themselves.
Looking back over the last year, our pupils have achieved so much in school
and in the community. They organised many events which demonstrate their
leadership, commitment and determination to support others. Over £7,600
was raised during our Africa Week last year, and the contributions went
towards supporting less fortunate people in the developing world. We also
supported a range of charities during the year including; Children in Need, Red
Nose Day, Troop Aid, Water Aid, Troop Aid and the Haiti Disaster Appeal and a
further £7,500 was raised in sponsored events and non uniform days. So with
the success of last year behind us, we look forward to an equally productive
and dynamic year ahead.
As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, one of our aims this year is to
improve the information, advice and guidance that we give to students at key
transition points. Our year 11 students had an assembly recently in which they
have had information about the next stage of their educational pathway. We
hope to see many of them at our Sixth Form Open Evening next week at
Castle.
Year 9 students will benefit from additional guidance to support their option
choices for key stage 4. We are reviewing the options for next year to ensure
that we can closely match the curriculum with the needs of individuals. This
will mean that some students will have a more limited choice of GCSE courses
to enable them to manage their work load in the core subjects, but they will
have increased opportunities in other areas. Our most able students will be
supported as closely as possible to achieve their full potential. Advice and
support will be available to all students as the year progresses.
