The Kenilworth Weekly News circulation drops by 11.7% since last year

It's been a very tough year for The KWN. The regional ABCs were published on 23 February reporting the Kenilworth Weekly News net ciculation per issue was 3,120 copies per week which dropped from 3,446 (July 2010) from 3,533 (Feb 2010) from 3,866 (Aug 2008) . So, if sales decreased by 11.7% for the KWN - what about the other local titles? The Leamington Spa courier has dropped by 9.5%. See Regional ABCs: Circulation falls on 92% of weeklies (from Press Gazette). Just reporting the facts.

Are Johnston Press aka The Courier Series trying to pull a Fast One?

What's the difference between The Kenilworth Weekly News, The Leamington Courier and The Warwick Courier? Besides the front page - very little. So, you pay the increased cover price of 55p and buy one paper - but what if you buy all three...and line them up?

Take a look at the graphic on the right - all editions have 76 pages (with the property section gone). We find The KWN has a unique front page and six other unique pages. The Leamington and Warwick Courier have unique front pages and only two other unique pages. The rest are common to all three papers except for page 3 and 9 where they get a Courier page (but Kenilworth doesn't). Pretty poor when you think Leamington has 20,000 more people than Warwick. So, if you are The Editor of these three papers - please get in touch and tell me I am wrong. And if I'm not - get in touch anyway. For those who do not know, all three titles are owned by Johnston Press (Northampton Newspapers). wiK values your comments.

High Speed Rail Beacon was lit tonight at 6pm as consultation is opened

A Beacon was lit tonight in a field at Crackely in Kenilworth. There were 30 in all streching from Bucks to Staffs which mark the proposed route the HS2 may take. The Way it Looks today - Wilkinson in Station Road

The new Wilko Store is starting to take shape. Tree Surgeons were out trimming back some foliage (compare this photo to one taken a month ago). If the store opening is still planned for 19 April 2011, then that's 50 days and counting. If you want any other Wilko Info, just click the labels below: General Store and Station Road.

Kenilworth Police Station is Finally Closed

This was the site today as the front doors of Kenilworth Police Station have finally closed. Someone has been busy making the entrance into an advertising board. We can see four officers, two mountain bikes and a car with the slogan Working Together and Call 01926 415000 (or go next door to the library of course). The Yellow Telephone Box remains for free calls to the Leamington control room.

The front doors of Kenilworth Police Station had been open for 42 years, 7 months, 2 weeks and 2 days (since opening in 11 July 1968).

Comment left in praise - but where does it belong?

We received this comment, it was labelled Superdrug in The Square, but our guess - does it belong at a Hairdressers? If you know, please email info@whatsinKenilworth.com
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Superdrug in The Square":

Excellent service - I had a repair job on an expensive top London barber cut that went wrong. Amy was great and she knew exactly what had to be done. She was very attentive and confident without being over bearing. Very skilled and all at a great price - thoroughly recommended.
SOLVED - the comment belonged at Wiggies The Barber Shop...and it is now there.

The Kenilworth Locality Profile - January 2011

Within the Warwickshire.gov.uk website lies the Warwickshire Observatory which is The home for information and intelligence about Warwickshire and its people. So, let's see what's in the latest Kenilworth Locality Profile for January 2011. The report is six pages long - loads of data, a few maps, and a summary.

So, what's worth reporting? The Kenilworth popultaion was 25,532 (in 10,468 households) of which 4,246 of those were children (mid 2009). Males were 49% and Females 51% and that's it, for anymore - read the KLP.

wiK is interviewed at an OpenData Event in Birmingham

Open Data is a real buzz word phrase at the moment. And as such, wiK attended a Making a Difference with Data event in Birmingham this evening. It was a chance to meet other hyperlocals, engage in a new project and build on the already growing level of transparency in local government. I was interviewed by Nicky Getgood. You can visit AudioBoo for the full interview (and a rare photo me). And for those who still want more visit Talk About Local, Journal Local or Podnosh.

Robbery at One Stop Caesar Road - Appeal for Witnesses

MEN armed with a hammer and a crowbar forced staff at Kenilworth shop to hand over cash from the safe. The pair stormed into the One Stop Community Stores in Oaks Precinct at about 8.30pm on Monday (21 Feb 2011), demanding money. After threatening the shop staff, the workers opened the safe.

The robbers placed the cash and some cigarettes in a black bin liner before leaving through the back of the shop. It’s believed the men left the back of the store, turned right and fled the scene in a waiting car. Officers plotted their route by using sniffer dogs.  Officers are appealing for witnesses who saw the men enter or leave the shop, or who saw a car they did not recognise parked at the back of the precinct in Caesar Road.

Those with information are urged to call Detective Constable Sarah Niblett at Leamington Spa CID on 01926 684270, voicemail 10597, as soon as possible. Information can also be given, in confidence, via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.  (Source: Coventry Telegraph)

Read the full Kenilworth School Newsletter
This week we held a Business Breakfast event in school, with the theme of ‘Raising Achievement’. The aim was to bring our Trust partners and other business professionals together with staff and students to celebrate our successes, share strategies that have been used to raise achievement and to plan future projects together. Our students and staff spoke extremely well at the Business Breakfast and two students in the sixth form played accomplished solos. The presentations from our visitors were useful and informative and the breakfast, prepared by our catering students, reflected a high level of culinary skill. My thanks go to everybody involved in making the morning a real success.

Warwickshire Youth Centres are Mapped

We all know about the cuts facing the Warwickshire Youth Service. The Kenilworth Youth and Community Centre is no doubt a focus for this town, but the issue of cuts is facing all Youth Centres. I will add News about each one as it comes in.

In the meantime, I would like to know of as many independent websites and groups as possible that raise the Google Presence of each centre. It is my belief that by having a very clear online message, it can lead to opportunities for each centre to survive. This is post is just one small step as a piece in that puzzle.

Fix My Street in Kenilworth

There are some web tools available to make your local area a better place. This one is called Fix My Street - simple idea, go to the website (enter a psot code), report a problem and hopefully it gets repaired.

Good to see this site has a feed (which I have placed at the bottom of this page). Any new postings from Fix my Street will appear on this automatically. Other feeds (to this website) include BBC News, Coventry Telegrapgh, other local newspapers, Police Safer Neighbourhoods Team and the Met Office Weather.

Deep Financial Cuts become Reality in Warwickshire and Coventry

Today, was the day when 13,000 petition signatures, a five minute speech from Vicky Fowler (former Youth Service member) and a further twenty five minute full council debate were not enough to stop the deep financial cuts becoming reality.

BBC Midlands Today iPlayer (report by Holly Lewis), the Spending Cuts are 3.52mins to 7.42mins in the programme), Warwickshire County Council to cut £33m and 1,800 jobs (BBC News) and Coventry City councillors approve budget cuts of £39m (BBC News).

Looking into Labels - 23 Hairdressers in Kenilworth - who's the best?

Every time I make a post at wiK, I choose a few labels. It works like this for a place: Business Name and Street. From that, the Contents of this site are generated. So, the word HAIRDRESSER returns 23 results. So, which one is the best? I have no idea - You decide. I do know which page is visited the most - I will reveal it in one week's time. Here's a clue, it is a hairdresser that has no website at all and Google knows very little about this business.

Kenilworth School Newsletter 11 February 2011

As many parents are already aware, we are changing the format of our reports based on a pilot with year 7 reports last summer term. Our new reports provide concise information on each subject with targets for improvement. For each subject, a pupil has an effort grade from 1 to 4 with 1 being the most positive down to 4. In addition to that, there are achievement and target grades. The achievement grade denotes the working grade or level and the target grade indicates a level that a pupil is expected to achieve by the end of the year. A target grade set by the teacher, is realistic, but includes a degree of challenge to which pupils should aspire. If a pupil’s report is issued early in the year and the achievement is below the target grade, but the effort is good or better, there is usually nothing be concerned about, because the lower achievement grade is a snap shot at a particular time and the pupil is likely to achieve the target grade at the end of the course with sustained effort.

Warwickshire Libraries Champion - The Search is On

Could this be You?
Perhaps, I am not a patient person and perhaps I can't read a diary properly, but as far as I can tell, it's eighteen days until the consultation process starts (1 March) and a further 90 days until it ends (31 May?). But why wait? I think someone needs to step up and be appointed as an independent Warwickshire Libraries Champion. Some who will think outside the bookcase, someone who will aim high and target all libraries to open 70 hours a week and settle for nothing less.

Here's what we know and how it might work. There is no doubt there are cuts - and the only way is to downsize Right? Wrong. Facing The Challenge, in my view, reads like a self fulfilling prophecy where the only way is down. It's worth quoting these ideas from FTC:
As part of the decision making process, discussions with communities will look at a range of options for the provision of a library service for the community. These will include:
• The local community delivering library services (Big Society principles)
• Working in partnership to deliver library services from another building in the community
• Use the existing building to deliver extra services to provide income to maintain a library service
 • Give the community the opportunity to run community libraries themselves
Communities would need to come forward with a robust business case for operating their own service, which we will explore with them. The business case will need to cover all the associated costs e.g. buildings and would need to take account of the on-costs and resource implications which would also need careful consideration. If no sustainable option is identified, Warwickshire County Council will vacate the building at that location.
So, what does this Warwickshire Libraries Champion look like? My guess, they like libraries, use libraries and have shared some special moments of thought in one (or many). But, it goes beyond that. They need to have a vision, some entrepreneurial spirit and their head in the clouds. But, their passion and creativity for the project will allow them to flip the whole idea on it's head and make all the Warwickshire Libraries Prosper. With any survival like this comes adaptation. Libraries cannot survive on books alone. If you are reading this and want to find out more - don't wait for a consultation form in a few weeks, get the ball rolling today. It's your library - so what are you going do with it?

Job Search Kenilworth - Job Centre Plus (live data: 10 Feb at 10.30am)

DirectGov Jobs Search Results
Three days ago, I was told by that the Leamington Spa Job Centre Plus had 368 live jobs and 2,000 people registered as Job Seekers. So, how many of those Jobs are in Kenilworth? Let's find out. The only way to search from the Job Centre is at  jobseekers.direct.gov.uk (you can visit a Job Centre, but as we already know - there isn't one, so it's into Kenilworth Library on a PC or see the Job Centre on a Thursday 2-4pm at Warwickshire Direct (which is in Kenilworth Library anyway).

So, from the main search box, we enter KENILWORTH and select distance as 1 mile. Search returns an automatic post code of CV8 2HD and 5 Jobs. Repeated the search with 2 miles = 24 Jobs,  5 miles = 28 Jobs and 15 miles = 32 Jobs. At this point, I would like to show list all those here for you - and I will try. But, for some reason there is no way to simply copy and paste them. Why? Because the data base is outdated and needs replacing. Most other data these days comes with a Atom or RSS Feed where the data can be embedded in any website (for an example of a feed, read the News at the very bottom of this website).

So to sum up, I am looking for a way to list ALL LIVE Job Centre vacancies here. At this stage, I do not have the complete answer, but in writing this post, I have just learned of jobisjob.co.uk, jobhits.co.uk and jobbrowser.co.uk which claimed to list jobs from all major job boards in the UK. For example,  I will investigate this and report back. I welcome any reader comments.

The Teapot meets at The Youth Centre every Friday - Join Them for a Cuppa

For the last seventeen years, Mary Harrison and other members of The Teapot have been meeting every Friday at 10.30 am for one hour at Kenilworth Youth and Community Centre. Their aim is to provide a meeting place for the elder residents of Kenilworth to make some new friends and enjoy a cuppa. Once a month, members of The Teapot are taken my minibus to a mystery lunch in a Warwickshire pub. What is fascinating is the collection of fifteen notebooks that have catalogued each Friday meeting over the past seventeen years. There is a list of each member name, comments, details of tea, coffee, Bovril and maybe who won the weekly raffle.

But, founding member Mary is acutely aware about the Youth Service cuts and how badly funding is needed in this community to keep such a valuable group like The Teapot open and able to see it's 20th Anniversary in a few years time.

Mary said, 'We have always had a magnificently appointed staff since starting the group in 1994 in Bertie Road. I remember doing the washing up by hand and carrying cups and saucers while stepping over toddlers playing beneath. It is brilliant to see a community working together with such a wonderful team of helpers.' Mary is passionate about the Youth Centre that caters for every age, in her words, 'From two to a hundred.'

Mary Harrison and The Teapot need all the publicity they can get when such difficult financial times are facing us all. There are many other groups that use the Youth and Community Centre that have not been mentioned so in the past weeks. For example, some of this diverse range include: Whitemans Dance Group, St John Ambulance, Watermelon Dance Studio, Yoga and Pilates Classes, Over 50s Keep Fit, Karate and the React Kidz Academy.

There is also the opportunity to book a room at the KY&CC for children's parties, business meetings and just about anything you can think of. That's why the centre already has over 800 members.

Facing the Libraries Challenge - what does it mean?

Warwickshire County Council published a document a few days ago called Facing the Challenge - Changing times for Warwickshire Library and Information Service.

So, what's it all about? Have a look at the tag cloud where all the text has been analysed and words then appear - the larger the word, the more times it's mentioned in the document. This idea has been used many times before when political leaders make a speech and the buzz words are counted.

Kenilworth Library is open again as today - Monday 7 Feb 2011

As seen at University
Wait a moment - before everyone gets excited and thinks this Coffee Nation machine is installed. Sorry just an idea, read on...

The library has a very different feel to it now the large desk has been replaced with open space and the new self serve automated booths. There seem to be fewer study desks, but I am told they are now dotted around and not in the six seat cluster. There are some Warwickshire Direct booths with the Police Front Desk Services not opening until 28 Feb (when the Police Station itself closes).

All of the bookcases are on wheels, so they can be easily moved if needed. The library can then become a very interesting place to hold an event. The space would allow a large audience to enjoy something like music in these vital times when a library fights for it's survival. What is missing is something to make you relax and stay longer - maybe a hot drinks machine like this? Remember 16 hours may be cut from the opening times of Kenilworth Library. Save Our Libraries Day is Today - But Where are the Warwickshire Events?

Image from CLIP
As we know Kenilworth Library is still closed today, but that does not stop us thinking about Save Our Libraries Day and trying to join in. At the time of writing, I cannot find any Warwickshire events. I cannot help thinking it was by design that WCC announced 16 closures two days before this event giving little time for local groups to spring into action - I'm sure Warwickshire will not go unnoticed.

Kenilworth School Newsletter 4 February 2011

From Mr Abbott:I hope that Year 9 students feel that they have been well supported this year through the options process. The returns should be in on Monday and these will be processed as soon as possible. If parents or pupils do not hear from the school, you can presume that you have been offered a place on your chosen courses for Year 10. In the next few weeks we are planning to have individual meetings with a small number of pupils whose option choices do not match and to those who we feel would benefit from further guidance from professionals.

Kenilworth Library and some Blue Sky Thinking

For just a moment - let's forget all about the cuts and pretend we are standing in Abbey End and wondering what to do and what's open. At the top of the pack is The Almanac - it's open for a massive 108 hours a week, then it's Subway 74 hrs, Blockbuster 69 hrs, Starbucks 67 hrs and then Kenilworth Library with 51 hrs. But, with these impending cuts 16 hrs may have to be carved off which leaves 35hrs a week.

Library Opening Hours Feb 2011
So, let's try out this Blue Sky Thinking where anything is possible. How about instead of cutting 16 hours there could be a way to increase the library opening hours to 70 hours a week. I am awaiting a breakdown of the library usage stats and what the finances look like. Yes, we all know there are no funds - so, it's up to doing what the rest of Abbey End do: sell coffee and food (food and drink has been allowed in the library for a while now), push back the wheeled bookcases and stage events like comedy nights or music, invite people to speak, hold seminars on any subject (blogging may be useful). Ask for donations or set a ticket price - it does not matter, as soon as the doors open, money could be made not lost. Who would volunteer for a few hours a week to help? Have a look at the table and see if you want to lose many green squares or create a need and fill it with some active Kenilworth People. More to Follow. See Save Our Libraries Day 5 Feb 2011

Warwickshire Libraries: 16 out of 34 could be closed - here's the map

With Kenilworth Library opening it's doors again on 7 February 2011 - it's good very good news that Kenilworth even has a library with the news today that Warwickshire CC are considering closing 16 out of their 34 libraries. WCC have released Facing the challenge on Libraries (see base of this article for full press release or download WCC Facing the challenge document) this morning following a BBC report at 6.30pm last night. Trying to remain balanced about it all, WCC say they want to consult with residents between March and June this year - with final decisions made July 2011.

Kenilworth is on the list as a Library that may have a reduction in it's opening hours. Kenilworth Library is open 51 hours - proposals may see this cut to 35 hours a week. So, where would you cut the 16 hours? Maybe, the Kenilworth People need to step in and use The Big Society to do the opposite and keep the library open up to 70 hours a week? wiK reported last year (Dec 2010) that some libraries have held pop concerts (Lancaster Library - Diana Vickers), introduced a Cafe (with Starbucks Coffee) at Ruislip Manor Library (in London)  to raise funds to keep their library open. And of course, everyone should now see BBC Panorama, The Cuts - Can you Fight Back?

Here is a map of all the 34 Warwickshire Libraries with RED markers = Closure. GREEN cut to 50hrs YELLOW = cut to 35hrs BLUE = cut to 20hrs. Is there a pattern? Please leave a comment or suggestion below this page - what are your views? New Media (like this) is a conversation.

Live TwitCam from West Midlands Police

Chief Inspector Kerry Blakeman from West Midlands Police produced his first Live Broadcast using Twitter and Twitcam at 7.30pm to 8.30pm on Tues 1 Feb 2011. This is a forward thinking idea where viewers can tweet live questions and see and hear instant answers. Twitcam can be used by anyone. After the broadcast has ended, the video can be replayed. In my view, this tech can be used by anyone, especially maybe teachers broadcasting to students in the exam season. Or in business to ask questions to an expert or in sport for a post match interactive real time interview. Well done West Midlands Police - let's hope Warwickshire Police can follow this idea very soon. Update: the Broadcast has now ended, but as yet is not available to watch again.

Police v Pawnbroker - Kenilworth Weekly News (Johnston Press)

There have been a string of news stories clashing with advertisements. Here is the latest one which has been sent to Roy Greenslade of The Guardian and posted within the hour. I will let him explain:

Here is one of those odd juxtapositions of editorial copy and an advert that unintentionally tells its own story. It's from the Kenilworth Weekly News in Warwickshire, which ran the story Police to sell off force headquarters in bid to save £23 million on the same page as an advert for a pawnbrokers. And look at that ad: headlined POLITE NOTICE (geddit?) next to a cheeky reproduction of a fake police shield, it goes on to ask if anyone would like to sell their medals. At least soon-to-be-redundant coppers now know where to pawn theirs. Hat tip: WhatsinKenilworth  (original posting from Greenslade Blog)  see: http://xetasblog.blogspot.com/
